Pam Tanowitz, New Work for Goldberg Variations, at Joyce
_
New York City Ballet performs George Balanchine’s Nutcracker, November 29 – January 5.
Pam Tanowitz + Simone Dinnerstein at Joyce, with Tanowitz’s New Work for Goldberg Variations. Simone Dinnerstein plays the great Bach work.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s season, from December 2 – January 5, 2020. These people are performing on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve!
New Dances: Edition 2019 is here! On the program are new dances by Amy Hall Garner, Jamar Roberts, Andrea Miller, and Stephen Petronio, including some live music. Each year, Juilliard Dance hires four choreographers to create an original work, one for each class—this year, class of 2020 to 2024. The only restriction (so the story goes) is that every dancer in each class must be included. This often translates to large productions, depending on the size of the class, and unusual and original artistry. Not every dance is a winner, but there is always at least one great work, and with the consistently high quality of the dancing, you really can’t go wrong (especially for $30).

–
There are only two final performances of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten, with Anthony Roth Constanza in the buff, Wednesday, December 4, and Saturday, December 7. You might want to hone your Captcha game because the performances are SOLD OUT, so only online rush tickets will be available.
More Reich. Yefim Bronfman will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic, December 5 – 7, when Steve Reich’s Music for Ensemble and Orchestra will also be performed. On the 7th, Reich is curating a late evening program, where New York Philharmonic musicians will play music by Reich and Muhly, along with a world premier by Gabriela Smith, at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. And So Percussion will play a fantastic program the same night (12/7), with music by Varese, Cage, Xenakis, Julia Wolfe, and…Steve Reich, at Zankel Hall. That’s a full weekend!
Eric Owens (12/13) and Joyce DiDonato (12/15) will both sing Schubert’s romantic, devastating (and yet charming) Winterreise this month. I recommend the Eric Owens version at 92Y, because the songs were written for tenor voice, and because the wonderful pianist Jeremy Denk will accompany Owens.
JACK Quartet will play two FREE concerts at John L. Tishman Auditorium at the New School December 17 and 18. They will premier new work by Catherine Lamb and Lester St. Louis, and play music by Clare Iannotta and Tyshan Sorey.
The wonderful harpsichorist Richard Egarr will join New York Baroque Incorporated for a FREE program called Pop-Up Bach: Dance Suites and Strange Solos, which will be played twice: once on December 18 at The Angel Orensanz Center in the LES, and once on December 19 at BAM. Each night the ensemble will play Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 5 and 6, and Orchestral Suites 1 and 3.
On the longest night of the year, Saturday, December 21, Phill Niblock will present his annual program, Phill Niblock: 6 Hours of Music and Film. High-volume minimalist droning will be the soundtrack to Niblock’s films of workers from around the working doing their chores. This will be my first Niblock show, and I am looking for someone to go to this with me…any takers?
The Second Annual Modern Piano Festival at Spectrum, through December, has some great ($15) programs. On December 10, Alexandra Saraceno will play Messiaen’s La Merle Noir, Preludes and other works; and on December 13, Gabriel Zucker will perform Messiaen’s Vingt regards sur l’enfant Jesu. Check out the Spectrum calendar here.
Tons of other stuff as well…see the calendar!
