- Noah Baumbach In Residence, a retrospective of Baumbach’s films to date, including Marriage Story (2019), along with a selection of films by other directors, at Metrograph, November 8 – December 22. I’ve seen most of his films, but would love to see Frances Ha on the big screen. The only one I have not seen is Mr. Jealousy (1997). As for the other films I might be into seeing: E. T. The Extra Terrestrial in 35mm, Pauline at the Beach (1983), dir. Eric Rohmer in 35mm, Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979), dir. Joan Micklin Silver (DCP), and Five Easy Pieces 1970), dir. Bob Rafelson in 35mm—even though I loathe things named “easy pieces,” whatever the number. People, stop naming stuff easy pieces, pleases.
- Shitamachi: Tales of Downtown Tokyo, at Film Forum, showing films concerning working class people in run-down districts of Tokyo by well-known and unknown directors, continues through November 7
- Luc Ferrari: Recherches Filmique, a retrospective of the French musique concrète and electroacoustic composer’s film work, at Anthology Film Archives, November 21 – 27
- Iris Barry’s History of Film, at MoMA, will project collected by Iris Barry, the first Film Library curator at MoMA. The films are mostly from the 1920s, but range in date from 1906 – 1933. The series includes von Stroheim’s Greed (1924) (123 minute version), with piano accompaniment; La passion de Jeanne d’Arc (1928) dir. Dreyer; Sjostrom’s incredible The Wind (1928); The Love Parade (1929) dir. Lubitsch; Battleship Potempkin (1925) dir. Eisenstein, and many others, all in 35mm. Through December 31
