Christian Marclay at Paula Cooper
The Chelsea art scene was as I predicted last month…boring. There is plenty of bland figurative painting (which I refuse to recommend, no matter how hyped), and several seen-it-before shows by blue chip artists like Richard Serra (no to “Forged Rounds,” yes to “Reverse Curve”), Peter Hujar, Anni Albers (Zwirner is hawking her sketchbook and fabric swatches as works), and Paul Klee (still recommended). The streets were crowded with new residents rather than gallery goers, and the new Pace building was full of ‘gram seeking models with their phones pressed to their faces. Perhaps all this is why so many galleries have moved to TriBeCa? The neighborhood felt…uncool for the first time in over 20 years. No other way to describe it. Nevertheless, there was a nice suprise (Bernard Piffaretti), a truly excellent show by Christian Marclay, some wonderful drawings by Hockney (at the new Pace), and a few good installations by Sarah Sze (but the paintings, as paintings, seem beside the point). If you saw only these four shows, you would have a good time.
Uptown—see Stephen Prina’s funny, charming show at Petzel. I have not been downtown yet.

Marilyn Nonken
–
The number of concerts this month is even more absurd than usual. My Word document was about 30 pages long at 10-point font, with over 200 concerts…and I am not even done yet! What’s a girl to do? I feel like crying.
Crying for joy, that is, because the New York Early Music Celebration runs this month, October 5 – 26. New York’s historically informed performance artists and ensembles will give 16 concerts around the city, mostly low cost, and several free. This year’s Celebration, titled “Ex Borealis,” highlights music and musicians from the Nordic and Baltic regions. Much of this music has been never performed in the United States. There will even be some busking, courtesy of The Renaissance Street Singers, on Sunday, October 6 on Christopher Street, west of Bleecker, and on Sunday, October 20, in Sheridan Square, both from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Momenta Quartet’s fifth annual Momenta Festival runs from October 15 – 19, with four free concerts, each curated by one of the quartet’s members. Most of their programming is new music, and this year they will premiers works by composers Roberto Sierra, Christopher Stark, and Alyssa Weinberg. Momenta Quartet is excellent, and the festival always ends up playing some of my favorite concerts of the season.
And Marilyn Nonken, we love her. She plays Messaien and others at Spectrum on October 27.
